Battery degradation may be associated with Gas evolution, which is suggested to be one of the root causes of the creation of a non-uniform and unstable Surface Electrolyte Interface (SEI) layer.

This directly affects the overall performance and longevity, alongside with reduced period of safe operation of the battery. In addition, Li reacts with electrolyte, metals and H2O/O2 traces, leading to lower ion availability and conductivity.

Identifying and elucidating the reaction mechanisms for both the evolution and consecutive the reaction of gas with the components of the cell, will allow to engineer materials and cell designs that would address the drawbacks of the technology. Although the process of charging and discharging batteries is heavily studied and understood up to a satisfactory degree, gas evolution and aging is a field that is not yet at a point that could provide information of a possible solution. Tracing evolved species at the atomic and molecular scale requires highly sensitive, accurate and selective characterization techniques.

Spectro Inlets offers real time detection with very high sensitivity of volatile species evolved during several cycles of charging and discharging of a Li-ion battery using chip-based Electrochemistry-Mass Spectrometry (EC-MS)5. The capability of our technique to be performed in volatile environments, with controlled sample temperature combined with full quantification of the obtained data, strengthens the understanding of SEI formation and degradation of electrode and electrolyte. Furthermore, inert sample transfer from a glove box eliminates the possibility of contamination by atmospheric species.
