Professor Dan Gladwin

Dan Gladwin is a Professor of Electrical and Control System Engineering at the University of Sheffield, specialising in energy flexibility, energy storage systems, and power electronics. With over a decade of experience operating grid-scale storage assets in UK energy markets, he combines academic research with practical market insight to evaluate how storage technologies deliver both technical and commercial value.
His research team has led major early demonstrators, including a 2 MW/1 MWh lithium titanate grid-connected battery and a multi-megawatt hybrid flywheel–battery system, exploring how different technologies can enhance grid stability and participate across a range of market services. He was Principal Investigator for the EPSRC Energy Storage Integration for a Net Zero Grid project, investigating how distributed, technology-agnostic storage assets can be integrated into the electricity system. His work also extends to battery swap technologies, supporting rapid energy replenishment and improved energy access in mobility and off-grid applications.
