Dr Matthew Lacey

Dr Matthew Lacey is an Expert Engineer for TRATON Group R&D, the R&D arm of the global parent company of the commercial vehicle brands Scania, MAN, International and VW Truck & Bus. Matt leads the battery cell team in Materials Technology based in Södertälje, Sweden, working with all aspects of cell chemistry and materials from research through to product development, field quality and venture capital.
Matt has a background in chemistry and electrochemistry and completed his PhD at the University of Southampton in 2012, then moving to Sweden for postdoctoral research and later a permanent researcher role at Uppsala University. He joined Scania in 2019, where his department was reorganised into TRATON Group R&D in 2025.
With nearly 20 years in the battery field, his work has spanned 3D microbatteries, lithium-air and lithium-sulfur chemistries, binder development, electrochemical characterisation methods, and cell teardown and degradation analysis.
