Selected Talk | Battery Safety & Abuse | Tuesday 9th September 2025 – 14:00 -16:00 – The Studio, Upper Foyer, Ground Floor
Elliott is a Lead Engineer at WMG, University of Warwick, specialising in lithium-ion cell safety and abuse testing. Elliott’s research interests revolve around sidewall rupture in cylindrical lithium-ion cells. Elliott is currently involved in the Faraday Institution SafeBatt project, where he is developing methods to reliably induce sidewall rupture and is investigating the consequences of this failure mode on the propensity for thermal runaway propagation in battery systems. Elliott is also developing novel experimental methods to characterise sidewall rupture, including the use of heat flux sensors in new calorimetry techniques. Beyond the SafeBatt project, Elliott has previously led verification and validation experiments to inform the design of an aerospace eVTOL battery pack with passive thermal runaway propagation and sidewall rupture protection.
