Dr Alexandre Ponrouch

Staff Researcher, Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC)

Dr. Alexandre Ponrouch is a Staff Researcher at the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) in Bellaterra, Spain, where he leads and coordinates the Materials for Energy research line. He completed his Master’s degree in Electrochemical Processes at the University Paul Sabatier (France) and earned his Ph.D. in 2010 from the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS-EMT) in Québec, Canada, focusing on the electrodeposition of metals, alloys, and oxide nanostructures for applications in energy devices.

Dr. Ponrouch’s research focuses on next-generation battery technologies, with a particular emphasis on fundamental electrochemistry to advance novel electrolytes, electrode interfaces, and interphases for post-lithium battery chemistries, including sodium, calcium, and magnesium-based systems. He has received several prestigious distinctions, including the International Battery Association Early Career Award (2019). He was also recognized in the 2024 and 2025 editions of the Stanford Citation Ranking as one of the world’s top 2% most highly cited researchers. In addition, he has secured highly competitive funding from the European Research Council, including both an ERC Starting Grant and a recent ERC Consolidator Grant (MULTIMETALBAT), which focuses on the development of safe, high-energy batteries based on metal anodes
